He is project coordinator and the principle designer of GCI’s scientific component, the Global Coherence Monitoring System and its international network of magnetic field sensor sites. A professor at Florida Atlantic University, McCraty heads up HMI and GCI researchers investigating the relationship between human and geomagnetic field environments and the interconnectedness of and communication among all living things. They are studying how these fields act as central synchronizing signals within the body, carry emotional information and serve as key mediators of energetic interactions between people and living systems. Mike Atkinson of Boulder Creek, California, the HeartMath Institute’s Research Center laboratory manager, is responsible for key development and implementation aspects of the Global Coherence Monitoring System. He has extensive experience gathering, processing and performing statistical analysis of a wide range of psychophysiological data. Atkinson is co-holder of three patents related to physiological coherence monitoring used in organizational, educational and health care settings. Short-term and 24-hour HRV assessments he designed are used internationally by physicians, researchers and health organizations. Atkinson, co-author of several psychological surveys used to assess stress, emotions and organizational effectiveness, has played a key role in many laboratory and field research studies examining the effects of stress and emotions on bodily systems, including heart-brain interactions and cognitive performance. Annette Deyhle of San Diego, California, is an internationally known geologist and marine geochemist. Deyhle, research coordinator for the HeartMath Institute, has worked at various research centers in Europe and the U.S. She did her doctoral work at the Geomarine Research Center, GEOMAR, in Kiel, Germany. Prior to joining the GCI research team in late 2008, she had been at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego for five years. Her research there focused on fluid-rock interactions and the chemistry behind earthquakes; plate tectonics; and volcanism. Deyhle’s work was the subject of numerous talks and articles in scientific journals, including Geology, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Chemical Geology and Marine Geology. Deyhle, a member of the American Geophysical Union and the European Geosciences Union, writes science commentaries for the GCI website.

William Vosteen of Lyndonville, New York, joined the Monroe Electronics Inc., research and development department following his education and worked on refining electrostatic measurement techniques and in other areas related to instrumentation. Today Vosteen, who is interested in fields related to consciousness, is president of Monroe Electronics. He has authored or co-authored a number of patents in the electrostatic measurement field. Vosteen has been involved with a number of electrostatic professional societies, including the Electrostatic Society of America, for which he was president.

What is the Global Coherence Initiative (GCI)?
The Global Coherence Initiative (GCI) is a science-based project of the HeartMath Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, that studies how people and Earth’s magnetic and energetic environment may be interconnected. GCI combines four research systems with a worldwide participation community, where people use the free Global Coherence App and synchronized Care Focus events to practice heart-focused care and intention together.
What are the Global Coherence Initiative’s four research systems?
GCI uses four interconnected research systems: the Global Coherence Monitoring System (GCMS), a network of ultrasensitive magnetometers that measures Earth’s magnetic field; the Global Consciousness Project 2.0 (GCP 2.0), a global network of random number generators; the HMI Tree Rhythm Research Site, which records electrical signals in trees and the surrounding earth; and the Global Coherence App, which records personal and group heart coherence.
What does the Global Coherence Initiative measure?
GCI measures four kinds of data: fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field, including activity linked to solar storms, solar wind and Schumann resonances (GCMS); departures from expected randomness in a network of random number generators during major global events (GCP 2.0); electrical rhythms in trees (Tree Rhythm Research); and heart rate variability (HRV) coherence from the Global Coherence app users. Researchers then study whether these data sets relate to one another.
How is GCI related to the Global Consciousness Project 2.0 (GCP 2.0)?
GCP 2.0 is one of GCI’s four research systems, not a separate initiative. Which Global Coherence Initiative findings are established, and which are still hypotheses?
Peer-reviewed studies by HeartMath researchers and collaborators have reported measurable correlations between solar and geomagnetic activity and human heart rhythms, such as a 2018 long-term HRV study published in Scientific Reports. Broader ideas, including that Earth’s magnetic field carries biologically relevant information and that large groups in heart-centered states help create a more coherent global field, are active areas of GCI research. Encouraging early results, such as network-wide coherence recorded by the Global Consciousness Project 2.0 during global meditations, are guiding the next stage of study.
