A Blueprint for Calmer, Smarter Classrooms

Whole-Child, Whole-School Success: How SEL and Self-Regulation Helped Transform an Albuquerque Charter

In the high-energy hallways of Mission Achievement and Success (MAS) Charter School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, emotional wellness isn’t just an abstract counseling concept—it is the living, breathing pulse of the daily schedule.

Serving roughly 1,800 K–12 students from predominantly low-income backgrounds across two campuses, MAS has quietly engineered an extraordinary educational turnaround. By seamlessly weaving comprehensive Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)—such as the Choose Love curriculum—alongside HeartMath® self-regulation practices into their everyday routine, MAS has proven a vital truth: emotional wellbeing and academic achievement go hand in hand.

The proof is in the results. Since fully integrating these holistic SEL and self-regulation practices, MAS shattered its own records, achieving the highest academic performance in its 15-year history. Today, the school ranks between 1st and 4th statewide in reading, math, and science, boasting the single highest academic growth rate in New Mexico while simultaneously driving teacher retention to new heights.

09:10 AM | A Unified Mindful Moment Across Campuses

Two school leaders take to the public address system, guiding 1,800 students and staff across both campuses through two to five minutes of shared, heart-focused breathing to establish focus for the day.

Periods 2, 3 & 4 | Classroom Resets & Transitions

Transitions can be chaotic, but at MAS, teachers begin each new class period with a brief, script-guided breathing reset to help students recalibrate their mental focus.

The “Radiating Love” Connection

To close out daily breathing sessions, students and teachers participate in an intentional SEL connection exercise: taking 10 to 20 seconds to direct genuine appreciation and warmth toward a selected classmate or teacher on a rotating system.

Frontier: Biofeedback & Systemic Gratitude

MAS continues to innovate by combining experiential learning with emotional tracking technology:

Interactive Biofeedback (Grades 3–12): Once weekly during the SEL block, older students attach Inner Balance biofeedback sensor clips. By seeing their emotional coherence scores in real-time on-screen, students gain direct, gamified insight into how their thoughts and feelings physically affect their bodies.

School-Wide Appreciation Culture: Building on daily SEL routines, MAS is introducing a structured gratitude protocol designed to ensure every single student and staff member is recognized, valued, and appreciated.

Empowering the Adults in the Room

A thriving SEL culture starts with grounded, emotionally supported educators. MAS invests deeply in the personal growth and resilience of its 175+ faculty members:

Comprehensive Coherence Training: Every staff member receives specialized training in self-regulation strategies. New hires undergo an intensive standalone workshop, while returning educators refresh their skill set annually. Everyone has access to the Inner Balance devices.

Weekly Professional Development: Every Monday morning from 7:30 to 8:30 AM, leader JoAnn Mitchell leads staff SEL sessions. Blending personal growth, energy management, and techniques from Dr. Joe Dispenza and HeartMath, teachers learn how to navigate stress and manage classroom dynamics with composure.

The Impact: Beyond Test Scores

By treating social-emotional learning and self-regulation as core disciplines rather than afterthoughts, MAS has yielded game-changing outcomes:

Academic Excellence: Ranked in the top tier statewide (1st–4th in reading, math, and science) with state-leading student growth metrics.

Transformative School Culture: Calmer, safer classrooms with fewer disruptions, stronger peer relationships, and deeper trust between students and teachers.

Sustainable Careers: Defied national trends in educator burnout by equipping staff with real-time tools to recharge, resulting in boosted teacher retention.

MAS Albuquerque is proving that when schools invest in the emotional foundation of their community, academic success naturally follows.
