Backed by science, research and extensive experience, HeartMath offers the health professional effective technologies and methodologies to use with service members and veterans.
HeartMath has developed a research-based system of scientifically validated tools and technologies to provide education and training on the body’s response to stress, how to regulate the nervous system and develop inner resources, self-regulation and self-responsibility. The programs have been shown to increase stress resilience and a broad range of cognitive functions in service members before deployment and to aid in reintegration and reduce symptoms of combat stress in troops returning from deployment.
HeartMath Training and Technologies help:
- Reduce symptoms characteristic of PTSD and combat operational stress (COSR)
- Increase cognitive functions related to sustained attention, memory and over-reactivity
- Reduce effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, including anger, anxiety and depression
- Promote self-responsibility and self-regulation
- Improve cognitive functions
- Lower health-care costs
The education and training programs for health professionals include use of the HeartMath tools and the emWave® heart-coherence technology to help patients and clients learn internal awareness, self-regulation and emotion-management skills. These skills are used by the health professional for self-care and with service members and veterans for effective treatment of stress-related symptoms of trauma, PTSD and traumatic brain injury. Programs are being used in numerous military facilities, veteran’s medical centers, PTSD clinics, substance-abuse and behavioral-health programs.
Health Professionals using HeartMath interventions help active-duty personnel and veterans learn how to transform stress and:
- Develop emotional resiliency
- Improve cognitive performance
- Reduce fatigue and sleeplessness
- Decrease friction in relationships, resulting in improved communication with spouses and children
- Sharpen combat readiness before deployment
- Reduce the effects of operational stress symptoms after deployment and during reintegration
HeartMath technologies and training programs are being used by:
- Doctors and nurses
- Psychologists and licensed therapists
- Occupational and recreational therapists
- Licensed counselors and clinical social workers
- Psychiatric nurses
- Speech pathologists
HeartMath Interventions Health Professional Certification Program and
emWave® Coherence Technology
The HeartMath Interventions Certification Program is designed for doctors, nurses, psychologists, counselors, social workers, therapists and other health-care professionals who want to add HeartMath tools and emWave technology into their therapeutic work with clients or patients. Health-care professionals who use the self-regulation techniques, protocols and technologies taught in the program guide service members and veterans in establishing a new physiological baseline that results in sustainable perceptual, attitudinal and behavioral changes. These easy-to-use, evidence-based tools, techniques and technologies have proven effective for a variety of emotional, mental and physical challenges.
Therapists and clinicians report that they have seen accelerated improvement in their clients. Results have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. This research-based system incorporates emotion-refocusing and restructuring techniques that are augmented by the emWave technology.
emWave® Coherence System
Regular use of the emWave technology and self-regulation skills has resulted in significant benefits resulting from stress reduction by military personnel with PTSD, chronic pain, anxiety, anger, depression, sleeplessness, panic disorders, irritability, mood disturbances, impulse control and substance abuse.

emWave
award-winning
handheld device
Both the computer-based emWave® Coherence System and the handheld emWave PSR accurately monitor the user’s heart rhythms by measuring the interval between each heartbeat using either a finger or earlobe pulse sensor. Then it computes and displays the heart-rate variability (HRV) level. Using visual and audio feedback, the user learns how to quickly create psycho-physiological coherence while practicing the self-regulation techniques. Additional features and functions enhance the ability to sustain HRV coherence and track progress.
The emWave (computer version) program can be installed on secured, networked military computers. The Certificate of Networthiness (CON) number is CERT-201008118.
