New Protocol to Measure Intuitive Ability

IHM has entered into a collaborative research relationship with Professor Murray Gillin at the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship at Swinburne University to collect physiological measures of intuition in successful entrepreneurs. As part of his research, he has completed many in-depth interviews with repeat entrepreneurs—entrepreneurs who have been successful many times. Professor Gillin has found that one of the common traits among them is a strong reliance on their intuition in their decision-making process. IHM has developed a new protocol for providing an objective measure of intuitive ability, which Professor Gillin is using in his study to see if these entrepreneurs demonstrate a higher level of intuition than the general population. In the first phase of the research, he has collected data from a group of entrepreneurs at Cambridge University. The data is currently being analyzed at IHM.

What is Intuition and Why Develop It?

Intuition has begun to emerge from a cloud of mystery. Once considered a gift enjoyed by only a few, intuition is now widely recognized as a natural skill that anyone can develop. The Oxford Dictionary defines intuition as: 1. Immediate apprehension by the mind without reasoning. 2. Immediate apprehension by a sense. 3. Immediate insight.

Did you know there is new research indicating that the heart’s field is directly involved in intuitive perception and is likely linked to an energetic information field outside the bounds of space and time? Using a rigorous experimental design, Institute of HeartMath researchers found compelling evidence that both the heart and brain receive and respond to information about a future event before the event actually happens. Our research shows that the heart appears to receive this "intuitive" information even before the brain. HeartMath tools such as Heart Lock-In® and Freeze-Frame® can facilitate you in developing your intuition. Also, the Heart Mapping® tool is an intuitive method for identifying your options. Intuititive access is a vital skill that can be applied to everyday life.

Benefits of Developing Your Intuition

    Use your intuition...

  • to improve communications with others, for a better understanding of their perspectives, attitudes, and feelings.

  • in the decision-making process when choosing among viable solutions.

  • to spawn insights and inspiration for your creative spark and expression.

  • to create coherence within yourself and to motivate ourselves to help humanity.

Inspiration for Education

New Horizons

Inspired by the opportunity to build more coherence in near by schools, a couple in Hampton, Virginia saw the advantages of the Institute of HeartMath’s Resilient Educator® program. They notified area institutions and in June, a local charitable educational foundation provided funds to train 26 educators.

Participating in this train-the-trainer program were administrators, teachers, counselors, and nurse-educators from three area institutions. Although many of the participants had little exposure to HeartMath beforehand, the program received a very positive response. As Dr. Bill Bowling of the Jackson-Feild Home for Girls noted, "I was pleasantly surprised by the power and effectiveness of the tools and techniques presented. It opened up a whole new avenue for a lifestyle change personally and an opportunity to share with staff and students."

The Resilient Educator®, emWave® PC/Mac Stress Relief System, and TestEdge® programs will be implemented at the following institutions:

  • New Horizons Regional Education Center has a multi-campus presence, serving a broad range of 1,505 high school students and 1,975 adult students. It’s fields of expertise include nursing, vocational school, special education, autism, and advanced high school science.

  • Jackson-Feild Home for Girls is usually the last hope for severely troubled girls, some as young as 10 years old. It provides a structured and disciplined living environment, counseling, education, and health care for approximately 50 girls with the goal of helping them eventually transition to independent living status.

  • St. Mary’s Star of the Sea School serves a pre-K through 8th grade population of 225 students. Here, children are offered an education that is known for both its academic challenge and integration of the Catholic faith

With this one act of kindness, the lives of numerous teachers and students have been touched. The value to our society is immeasurable. If you would like to sponsor a HeartMath train-the-trainer program in your local area or school, please contact IHM’s Executive Director, Katherine Floriano, at 800-711-6221.

Returning Home

—by Sheva Carr, Licensed HeartMath One-on-One Provider

Jake Kubetz, a young lawyer and National Guardsman from New York, was featured in our Spring 2005 newsletter, which described how he used HeartMath tools to deal with the stress of preparing for his deployment to the war in Iraq. Recently returned from his tour of duty, Jake agreed to share some of his experiences while abroad and coming home, and how HeartMath was helpful in his reintegration. Jake says:

"When I arrived in Iraq, there were new situations and new stressors to deal with minute by minute. The moment we landed, I had to present myself before superior officers to assess what role I would play when a mortar attack hit! My first day, and already they were that close, trying to kill us! At the same time, I was being evaluated by the other officers and had to put my best foot forward. Talk about a stressful job interview! There was only one place to go: I shifted to my heart. With the Quick Coherence technique, I handled the situation with calm and poise. I got in touch with the knowing that I could handle it, and keep my cool. I wish everyone had been as prepared as I was to deal with the stress that we were under. Thanks to HeartMath, I made it back in good spirits; it was the best weapon I had over there, and the only one I brought back with me and continue to use.

"Thanks to HeartMath, I made it back in good spirits; it was the best weapon I had over there, and the only one I brought back with me and continue to use"

Since my return, everyone seems to want to talk to me about the war and give me their opinion about the whole thing. From my vantage point, I did what I had to do there to stay in integrity with myself, and all I want now is for all my friends to come home alive—for everyone to come home intact. I would worry about the soldiers who are still there, but I send heart to them instead. I know that the only reason I got to come home is because some other guy took my place, so I send him a lot of appreciation.

You would think that getting home would be the easy part, but it’s had its own stressors. The heart tools helped me to readjust to life in the States and the culture shock of coming back.

Returning Home

Reconnecting with my family and girlfriend—everyone wanted me to make special time for them. HeartMath helped me communicate my care to them, without getting overwhelmed by their demands.

Having practiced HeartMath on a real battlefield, now I use it in courtroom battles all the time. Just recently, I had to do a deposition with victims and witnesses of an ugly sex crime. As I approached the court room, I could feel the stress creeping in. I did the Quick Coherence technique and it helped me line up with my care for the people, which made it easy. HeartMath helps me focus on what I really need to focus on, bringing perspective to my life that also empowers me to let go of what doesn’t matter.

The life experiences I’ve had over the last two years, when met with HeartMath tools, have left me with a lot more appreciation for the little things in life. My life is a lot simpler now. I appreciate just getting to go to work, just being with my family and my girlfriend, growing a garden in my backyard with herbs and tomatoes and soy beans, and walking my dog on the beach. The heart empowers me to appreciate these little things—which are really the important things—so much more, and to let go of what just doesn’t matter.

Other people deal with extremely stressful situations in their lives. I am not special. I just had the HeartMath game plan for dealing with the stress. And from my vantage point, everyone else would be better off if they did too."

HeartMath Keeping
People Alive and
Healthy in Australia

—by Peter Storey and Maria Thompson,
HeartMath Australasia.

We launched HeartMath in Australia in 2001, creating a "bow wave" of awareness of the HeartMath system. The quality and authenticity of the products of HM USA ensured that HeartMath was a winner in this region "Down-under".

We are "moving full steam ahead" with the HeartMath courses and materials. The efficacy of the HeartMath tools and training materials have been proven here both qualitatively and quantitatively in trials of some hundreds of users. We have now reached thousands of end-users, including office workers, train drivers, sports people, mums and dads, students, teachers, and the list goes on. The organisations we work with include the largest ones in the region, such as Telecom, Internal Revenue–Taxation Dept., Government Rail, international banks, schools, hospitals, and the Department of Defence.

We have also reached hundreds of psychologists, counsellors, coaches, therapists, and other health professionals. To date we have licensed more than 60 of them as HeartMath Providers, who work with us to bring HeartMath skills to their clients. The HeartMath course we are providing to doctors is in association with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Their RACGP study of the conditions that GPs face resulted in a book; Keeping the Doctor Alive. The HeartMath skills and technology are being employed as a key deliverable in the program to keep the doctors well and to help them reduce their stress levels and build greater resilience.

An exciting part of our work is to disseminate the HeartMath emWave PC/Mac software system and other educational materials into schools and health systems. Presently an Australian government educational body is looking at incorporating the materials into the Australian school curriculum for all schools. The new handheld emWave Personal Stress Reliever® unit is already opening up a whole new set of applications in every market, and so the coming year will be sure to be a full one.

 HeartMath Energy-Savers

The Power of Prep Tools

No matter what your situation, the following "Prep Power Tools" can help prevent stress and connect you with your intelligent self. Use the Prep Power tools with meaningful, genuine intent. They are a serious ally.

  • Pre-Care and Pre-Treat. You can "pre-care" about anything or anyone to improve the environment with care. Pre-care by sending care, from your heart, before a phone call, appointment, meeting or event. You can "pre-treat" your attitude and energy by sending pre-care to yourself and to your intention to take energy responsibility.

  • Pre-Care can turn an uneasy situation into a breeze. Take a minute or two before a meeting or uncomfortable situation and send genuine care from the heart. Then keep reminding yourself to increase your care during the meeting or situation, as this will help you stay smooth during challenges that might arise and give you more intuition and creativity.

  • Pre-Treat and Pre-Care can ease the delivery of shocking or surprising news. Pre-Treat yourself to find your higher intelligence, take energy responsibility, and keep your pitch up before and during the situation. Pre-Care with meaningful intent and compassion for the person to whom you are conveying the news.

The Power of Prep Tools

  • Pre-Care is not thinking about what to say. Are you really sending heart or are you thinking about the situation with worry, projection and judgments underneath? Send heart with a genuine intent to really care; then your care will be more effective.

  • Pre-Treat yourself before an awkward or difficult situation. Pre-treat how you might react. You can think you are pre-treating but still be musing or brooding, which is not effective treatment. Really shift to your heart and do a genuine pre-treatment and send care, or you will be draining the energy you need. Take a mature look and be open to new approaches, attitudes, thoughts and feelings about the difficult situation.

  • Take a moment each morning to Pre-Treat your day. Prep to have more understanding for others during the day. Pre-treat yourself to make adjustments and be flexible during challenges that naturally arise. Pre-treat to remind yourself to use the tools proactively, not just when you try to dig yourself out of hard situations.

The Coherent Heart
The Coherent Heart

A new scientific monograph, The Coherent Heart: Heart–Brain Interactions, Psychophysiological Coherence, and the Emergence of System-Wide Order, by Rollin McCraty, Ph.D., Mike Atkinson, Dana Tomasino, and Raymond Trevor Bradley, Ph.D., offers an in-depth understanding of the role of the heart in system-wide coherence and a new perspective on heart–brain interactions.

This 65-page monograph is an all inclusive account to date of the Institute of HeartMath’s contribution to the study of the psychophysiology of emotions and heart–brain interactions. This work explores communication within and among the body’s systems through the generation and transmission of rhythms and patterns of psychophysiological activity. Using the pattern of the heart’s rhythmic activity as the primary physiological marker, six different modes of psychophysiological function are identified, distinguished by their physiological, mental, and emotional correlates.

IHM’s research on the psychophysiology of emotions is synthesized for the first time in a typology—a conceptual "map"—of psychophysiological interaction, which is presented graphically

IHM’s research on the psychophysiology of emotions is synthesized for the first time in a typology—a conceptual "map"—of psychophysiological interaction, which is presented graphically.

Explored in depth are the characteristics and benefits of the psychophysiological coherence mode, associated with sustained positive emotions and a global shift to increased synchronization and harmony in psychophysiological processes. Topics covered include how coherence aids in pain reduction, the interactions between heart rhythms and respiration, how heart coherence affects emotional experience, and how coherence improves cognitive performance.

Another section of the monograph focuses on the heart’s role as a central nodal point in the psychophysiological network. It discusses four major communication pathways through which the heart transmits information to the brain and body, leading to an understanding of the heart as the "global conductor" in the human symphony. This section includes new data showing how the structure of the heart’s electromagnetic field changes during different psychophysiological modes, as well as a new theory of how the heart encodes and distributes energetic information in a holographic-like process.

Important note: This monograph is intended primarily for researchers, medical professionals, students of psychophysiology and related fields, and laypeople who desire a deeper understanding of HeartMath’s research.

Intuition Papers
Generate Big Stir

Professor Murray Gillin invited IHM research staff to present papers at the Third AGSE International Entrepreneurship Research Exchange, held in February in Auckland, New Zealand. At this research conference, Dr. Ray Bradley presented two papers, one that he wrote on a theory of intuition and one written by Dana Tomasino. Both papers drew on HeartMath’s research on coherence and the role of the heart in intuition. The papers generated an explosion of interest among the conference participants. Dr Bradley’s paper, "The Psychophysiology of Entrepreneurial Intuition: A Quantum-Holographic Theory," won two awards, including the award for the "Best and Most Thought-Provoking Paper" of the entire conference. Tomasino’s paper, "The Psychophysiological Basis of Creativity and Intuition: Accessing ‘The Zone’ of Entrepreneurship," discussed HeartMath coherence-building techniques and the emWave Stress Relief System as tools for helping entrepreneurs hone and develop their intuitive and creative abilities.

Murray Gillin, the conference organizer and co-chair, commented that the two papers generated "the biggest stir" he had witnessed to date in the history of these conferences. Many new connections were made in this important international research community. Dr Bradley has submitted his paper to the Journal of Business Venturing and Professor Gillin invited Ms. Tomasino to publish hers in a special issue of the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, which will feature the conference’s eight "best" papers. It was especially gratifying that HeartMath’s work inspired such excitement and enthusiasm in this newly emerging field in business management.
