Introduction
This section of the Emotional Security Tool KitT contains a teacher guide with lesson plans created specifically to address anger and resentment, and to help students reinstate emotional balance and security.* The course is intended to be simple and enjoyable. The lesson plans are presented in a sequence that should make the course unfold smoothly, with activities geared to reinforce the overarching theme.
The strength and value of this course lies in the positive emotional refocusing techniques, or "tools," which provide a systematic and replicable process to decrease physiological stress, reduce emotional turmoil and promote positive shifts in perception, attitudes and behavior. The efficacy of these techniques is based on their capacity to enhance emotional awareness and promote positive emotion-driven physiological changes that alter perception and nervous system dynamics. These interventions have previously been shown to reduce anxiety and depression and improve physical health status in various populations. They are currently in use in a variety of settings throughout the world, including universities, hospitals, major corporations, government institutions, incarceration facilities, the military and schools.
IHM has conducted research and applied studies within a variety of school environments. These studies demonstrate that when students learn to achieve heart-brain harmony, they significantly improve not only their academic performance, but their emotional stability and behavior as well. Teachers who use the HeartMath tools in their classroom also report greater personal resiliency and improved student-teacher relationships. Case studies of children using these HeartMath tools have proven long-term sustainability.
*If you teach younger children, you may find you can translate the concepts and tools in many cases for your age group.
