Make a Gift

A key element in the Institute of HeartMath’s ability to continue the kind of research and development that has made it one of the world’s pre-eminent authorities on the science of the heart, stress and emotional management and other areas related to the overall well-being of the human condition is the generosity of individuals and organizations. Your gift today can help a student or teacher participate in one of HeartMath’s national learning programs or a soldier returning from Iraq to overcome the emotional and mental trauma of war. You’ll ensure that IHM researchers can continue exploring emotional physiology and heart-brain interactions, conducting clinical and organizational studies and studying the physiology of learning and optimal performance.

HeartMath, a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization, has developed a Planned Giving Program that offers many options for contributing wisely to the vital work we do. Among the choices available are cash contributions, charitable annuities, trusts, endowments, donations of real and personal property or naming IHM as a beneficiary in your will. You may also elect to contribute on behalf of someone who is doing good work or in memory of a loved one. Choose from among the following to support the important work of the Institute of HeartMath.

Become a Member: When you become a member of the Institute of HeartMath, you’re not only supporting an organization that truly cares about the emotional, mental and physical well-being of people everywhere, you’re also giving yourself the gift of a healthier, more energetic and peaceful way of living. Click on the following links to learn more about becoming a HeartMath member and the many benefits you’ll receive and about membership in the institute.

Become a HeartMath Monthly Giver: The Institute of HeartMath has a monthly giving option for donors who would like the convenience of spreading their contributions over the year. Even a small amount is significant when you give every month. As little as $5 each month can help us bring positive change to the lives of people around the world. Your funds are put to work immediately to support research on emotional physiology and stress management and to develop and provide community programs to people who otherwise would not have access to them. You may set up your monthly donation on our secure Web site at IHM Monthly Giving Option.

HeartMath’s Special Funds

IHM created the HeartMath for Communities Project, Heart-Based Education Sponsorship Fund and HeartMath Military Service Appreciation Fund to address a financial need in three critical areas today. The Global Coherence Monitoring System Fund was established to pursue the exciting and developing frontier of electromagnetic fields within and between human beings and the Earth and ionosphere.

  • HeartMath for Communities Project: This special outreach program of the Institute of HeartMath launched in summer 2010 is helping individuals through difficult times by training your local and regional nonprofit organizations to present the two-hour HeartMath® De-Stress Workshop™, at no cost, to those they serve. This highly beneficial workshop, based on the science of stress reduction and emotion self-regulation, is helping individuals and families lower stress, restore energy and build the self-confidence and resiliency needed to face today’s challenges.

The HeartMath for Communities Project is benefitting unresourced nonprofit organizations such as community centers, volunteer fire departments, military personnel and their families, veterans centers, churches, women’s support groups, agencies helping seniors, troubled youth and parents and many others. To learn more about the HeartMath for Communities Project or To make a contribution today.
  • Heart-Based Education Sponsorship Fund: Your financial contributions to this fund will help the Institute of HeartMath put our life-changing educational programs such as TestEdge® and the Resilient Educator® and our scientifically developed and tested technology into the hands of students and teachers who otherwise would not have access to them. Click here to learn more about this fund or to contribute today.
  • Military Service Appreciation Fund: Recognizing the tremendous hardships and psychological problems faced by troops returning from combat and the growing number of requests for HeartMath tools and technologies from our already overextended military and Veterans Administration facilities, IHM launched this important fund. Click here to learn more about the fund or to contribute today.
  • Global Coherence Monitoring System Fund: IHM, in partnership with astrophysicist and nuclear scientist Elizabeth Rauscher, are collaborating to build an elaborate monitoring system to measure and explore fluctuations in the magnetic fields generated by Earth and the ionosphere and whether the Earth’s field is influenced by or reflected in human heart-rhythm patterns or brain activity. HeartMath’s Planned Giving Program

We know you support the Institute of HeartMath and would like to find a way that is right for you to help us continue our important research and development, and the innovative, life-changing programs that have benefited so many people, young and old, around the world. Today there are many ways to give wisely, in addition to cash, and IHM understands that it may be more convenient or practical for you to use one or more of these methods to make your contributions. We have compiled the following list of options for you to consider. The name of each option is a link to a thorough discussion of how you may take advantage of this type of contribution and what it means for you. Click here to read more about IHM’s Planned Giving Program.

  • Appreciated Assets:
    • Stocks
Using publicly traded stocks, bonds or mutual-fund shares that have increased in value to make your gift will net an additional tax benefit and larger donation because the IRS allows you to make your securities transfer to the Institute of HeartMath without assessing a capital gains tax on the increased value. The result is a larger tax deduction and a larger donation.
    • Real Estate
Creative real estate gifts give you the option of using your property, now or later, to make a donation to the Institute of HeartMath.
    • Charitable bargain sale
This lets you sell your residence or other property to IHM at less than its fair market value and in return receive a lump-sum payment and charitable tax deduction for the discount on the market value of your property.
    • Retained life estates
This option allows you to donate your home to IHM and continue living there for the remainder of your life while continuing to pay taxes and upkeep, in return receiving a charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the home minus the present value of the life tenancy you have retained.
  • Gifts that cost nothing during your lifetime:
    • Bequests: Specific, Residuary or Contingent
A gift to the Institute of HeartMath in your will or revocable trust proclaims your confidence that we will continue to pursue our mission and make a difference in the lives of future generations. A bequest is easy to arrange, does not affect your assets or cash flow during your lifetime and can be revocable.
  • Gift Plans:
    • Retained life estates
This option allows you to donate your home to IHM and continue living there for the remainder of your life while continuing to pay taxes and upkeep, in return receiving a charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the home minus the present value of the life tenancy you have retained.
    • Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts
The charitable remainder annuity trust allows you to make a gift to HeartMath by setting up a trust fund that can hold tax-free securities and tax-free income and then pay you and/or your beneficiaries a fixed income.
    • Charitable Remainder Unitrusts
HeartMath’s unitrust pays you and/or other beneficiaries income as a fixed percentage of the principal of a trust fund. The unitrust is revalued annually and income in excess of the percentage payout is reinvested.
  • Assets You Can Give:
    • Cash
Cash is the simplest way for you to donate and provides immediate benefit to HeartMath. Gifts of cash can be deducted against a larger portion of your taxable income than gifts of appreciated property. Your gift can be made to HeartMath outright, or can fund one of its life income arrangements.
    • Personal Property
You can transfer a valuable painting, antiques, collectibles or other personal property such as investment partnership shares or closely held stock as an outright gift or perhaps as a life-income gift.
    • Stock
Using publicly traded stocks, bonds or mutual-fund shares that have increased in value to make your gift will net an additional tax benefit and larger donation because the IRS allows you to make your securities transfer to the Institute of HeartMath without assessing a capital gains tax on the increase in value. The result is a larger tax deduction and a larger donation.
  • Gifts That Pay You Back:
    • Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract in which IHM pays you and an optional second beneficiary a fixed amount for life in return for your contribution. It assures you of payments that won’t vary and that are secured by the assets of the Institute of HeartMath.

Then you may take a tax deduction on the estimated value of the property and HeartMath may use it for various purposes or sell it to obtain cash to meet its needs.
