Grandparents

Grandparents

INTRODUCTION: A grandparent’s love for a grandchild is pure and unconditional. This bond is second in emotional power only to that of parent and child, says grand-parenting expert, psychiatrist and researcher Dr. Arthur Kornhaber, director of the longest-running research and information project on grandparents.

"Considering the state of our world, environmentally, culturally, philosophically … it is more imperative than ever that grandparents do not sit idly by, but rather apply their wisdom, experience and life perspective … to change the world for the better," Kornhaber, president of the Foundation for Grandparenting and author of several books about grandparents, states at www.grandparenting.org.

Societies throughout human civilization have looked to grandparents as sources of wisdom, fountains of family history and cohesion within the family.

Historically, grandparents too have aided in the rearing of children, and their presence helped children become more accepting and respectful of their elders and to better understand the aging process. If our grandparents’ stature in the family has somewhat diminished in modern times, statistics show they have definitely regained their place in recent years.

Estimates in 2008 put the number of grandparents in the U.S. at 60 million. In 2010, even before the latest Census figures were released, some put the figure at 70 million. That’s more than 1 in 5 of the nation’s approximately 311.8 million people, and the number is growing.

More remarkable, especially for those who may views grandparents as carefree and kicking back, 1 in 10 children live with a grandparent, and 41% of them were being raised primarily by at least one grandparent, a Pew Research Center study recently found. The figure spiked in 2007, when the Great Recession began, and continued to increase through 2008, the first full year of the global economic crisis.

Your Grandchildren By Ages:

Your grandchildren, ages 2-6, are in those magical years when they are curious about everything, eager to learn and see the world virtually from their hearts. All the research, at the Institute of HeartMath and elsewhere, shows that what children learn, especially socioemotional skills, in the years before school are critical to their success academically and later in life.

The unconditional love between grandparents and grandchildren and the care and appreciation that are hallmarks of this special bond create an ideal emotional environment for young children and can help them form strong and lasting relationships as they mature.

HeartMath’s Wild Ride to the Heart™ game for the entire family is a wonderful way for grandparents to enjoy the company of their grandchildren, and the Heart Songs album is a gift young grandchildren will cherish.

Your grandchildren, ages 7-11, have mostly outgrown the I can do it stage, and now actually do most of the things others previously did for them. Their sights are set beyond the play yard at home to the play yard at school. In preadolescence, your grandchildren learn and rely on new skills and grow more curious about a world outside their home and family.

HeartMath’s researchers say the preteen years are the ideal time for helping children learn about and self-regulate their emotions. Acquiring emotional skills now will help to improve behavior, performance and success at home, school and play.

You will enjoy making faces and navigating the pitfalls of Wild Ride to the Heart with your grandchildren, the new game from HeartMath that teaches them about their emotions in a fun way.

Your grandchildren and their parents should know about HeartSmarts® Grades 3-5 for the home or classroom. It is a unique learning program that bridges academic and emotional learning.

Your grandchildren, ages 12-18, are at a critical juncture as they mature into young adults and begin making choices that will set the stage for much of the rest of their lives. During these years, they solidify their own identities and flex their independence. They’re able to engage in much more complex thinking and are more adept at expressing their emotions.

Research shows positive, heart-focused interaction during this period, when peer pressure is intense, relationships are more complex and the demands at school and in life typically are greater than ever before, can have immediate and lifelong benefits.

An effective method for helping young adults overcome test anxiety, one of the most common and difficult challenges of middle school, high school and college, is the TestEdge® Interactive Learning Programs from HeartMath.

The emWave® Desktop for PC and Mac is the HeartMath computer-based interactive learning system that has proven highly effective at reducing stress, anxiety and emotional turmoil and improving academic success.

Children Are the Future

A unifying hope of human beings throughout the history of the world has been our common desire for a better future. For all the grandiose ideas, grand plans and great inventions in our quest, the greatest resource ever known for achieving this goal is the children of the world.

We at the Institute of HeartMath believe the greater our love and care for the children of all nations, the greater our chances for achieving a better future. Our research indicates children who learn emotional and social life skills have an excellent opportunity to achieve success at home, during their academic years, in relationships and as adults.
