Institute of HeartMath Education

Supplemental Classroom Programs

The pressures to achieve academic success have never been greater for schools, teachers and students. Yet many students come to school unprepared mentally, emotionally and physically to learn. Obstacles to student learning include unsupportive home environments, poverty, inadequate knowledge of English, peer pressure, overstimulation from media, violence, a range of disruptive emotions such as anxiety and anger, and risky behaviors. Also, for many students, emotional stress negatively affects their motivation, learning and performance.

Research conducted over the past 21 years by the Institute of HeartMath has provided new insight into the physiology of emotions, learning and performance. Based on this research, HeartMath has developed a set of heart-based tools and techniques that enable students to better recognize and self-regulate stress, counter the effects of test anxiety and other emotionally based blocks to learning, and improve overall classroom climate. These tools, which form the foundation for all of our supplemental learning programs, are simple, easy-to-use interventions that can be adapted to virtually any culture and age group.

Educators frequently report that as students learn to harness the power of their emotions and build resilience, there is a positive shift in classroom climate, reduced tension, fewer relationship conflicts, less distraction and greater calmness, attentiveness and cooperation. Such shifts often are followed by measurable improvement in students’ learning and academic performance, discernment abilities and resourcefulness. Also, they often are more effective in dealing with problems, interacting with peers and others, and making decisions that require a broader, more emotionally balanced perspective. As students learn to put their hearts into their work, they begin bridging emotions and academic performance and are better able to reach their maximum potential.
