Education  |  Research

The Institute of HeartMath has established many alliances and partnerships with a variety of institutions and organizations that have similar interests and goals and for such purposes as scientific research and studies and providing the life-changing products, services and programs that comprise the HeartMath System to a broad range of individuals, ranging in age from young children through adults.

Education

Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, Calif.

IHM has a strong, ongoing collaborative relationship with Claremont Graduate University. Dr. Lourdes Arguelles, professor of education at CGU, is a Visiting Scholar at IHM; Dr. Rollin McCraty of IHM is an adjunct professor and Dr. Ray Bradley of IHM is a Visiting Scholar at CGU. Dr. Robert A. Rees of IHM has been a Visiting Scholar at CGU’s Centers for Arts and Humanities and a member of the CGU School of Religion Community Council.

Claremont Graduate University’s School of Educational Studies, collaborating with IHM, created "The Heart in Education" graduate course focusing on the heart’s role in world cultures; science of the heart; and application of HeartMath technologies in urban school settings. This marks the beginning of the institutionalization of the HeartMath System in graduate schools of education. The students apply HeartMath tools and technology in their own classes. Other Claremont doctoral students help faculty at the undergraduate Claremont Colleges introduce HeartMath into classes.

A study conducted by Nola Butler Byrd, Soraya Nauroz and L. Jeanne Fryer, under Arguelles’ direction, assessed the role of HeartMath techniques and the emWave® PC Stress Relief System in enhancing the emotional management and academic achievement of students in an intercultural education course. The research team has been developing a manual for teaching HeartMath at the college level.

CGU faculty were significantly involved in the TestEdge® National Demonstration Study on Student Standardized Testing.

Youth Learning Institute, Clemson University, Clemson, S.C.

The Institute of HeartMath and the Youth Learning Institute (YLI) at Clemson University have a close relationship. YLI, one of the country’s premiere experiential learning centers, has created several programs incorporating HeartMath tools, techniques and technology into their youth development, juvenile justice and academic education programs. One, developed in collaboration with IHM staff, is a three-day academic experience and a weeklong summer camp called The Edge. This unique summer adventure features interactive tools and techniques that test potential through intellectual, physical and group-based challenges. Kids learn to overcome the stress of high-stakes challenges and improve focus, clarity and problem-solving. Go to Clemson University Web site.

University of Cincinnati Math Anxiety Project, Clermont, Ohio

The University of Cincinnati, Clermont College and the Greater Cincinnati Tech Prep Consortium partnered to address the pedagogical needs of high school students in mathematics to prepare them for higher education. They began a research study with high school juniors struggling with math anxiety and needing to pass the math portion of the COMPASS entrance exam. Poor performance on the entrance exam delays eligibility for required academic courses that are essential to each student’s career track. Initial results showed substantial gains among a small group of students, leading to an expansion of the initiative. In the program’s fourth year professors Michael Vislocky, Ph.D. and Ron Leslie, Ph.D., integrated HeartMath into math classes with the principal and math teacher’s help as part of their College Prep Readiness Program. They conducted the program over seven weeks and found an average 73% increase in math scores on the COMPASS exam. Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah

For the past several years HeartMath has been involved with various projects at BYU. These include training staff at the campus counseling center, developing a minicourse with the Independent Study Division, designing an instrument to gage students’ emotional state for learning and test-taking and exploring joint research projects with several academic departments.

California State University

Numerous faculty at various campuses in the California State University system are collaborating with the HeartMath Research Center and Education Division to study how HeartMath tools and technologies can help improve academic performance and reduce the number of high school dropouts.

For example, the math department at CSU Fresno is collaborating on a study to evaluate the efficacy of a program for improving learning of entry-level college math skills. Also, a study investigating the effectiveness of HeartMath programs at helping teachers is under way at CSU San Jose.

Research

St. Petersburg State Research Institute of Physical Culture, Russia

Russian physicist Konstantin Korotkov and his team at the St. Petersburg State Research Institute of Physical Culture have formed a collaborative partnership with the HeartMath Research Center. Dr. Korotkov and his team utilize a variety of equipment to measure changes in the structure, pH and photonic emissions of water and other substances. They are currently involved in a variety of innovative studies involving the power of intention and are investigating whether sending loving attention to polluted water will change its key properties.

Dr. Korotkov is the inventor of Gas Discharge Visualization (GDV), a device used for real-time imaging of the biofield surrounding an organism. Studies conducted in Russia and elsewhere have shown that measurements of the body’s biofield reflect its health and vitality.

HeartMath and Korotkov are collaborating on various studies, including examining the correlations between heart-rate variability and GDV systems measures and the effects of intentionality when people are in coherent states. Go to Global Coherence Project Brochure.

Sino-American Stress Management Center, China

HeartMath recently expanded its geographic footprint by forming an alliance with Genesis Education Group. This powerful collaborative partnership will bring HeartMath’s effective cutting-edge training programs and products to China’s rapidly growing market.

Genesis Education Group, established in China in 1995, is well known for its outstanding reputation, expertise and commitment to providing the highest quality experiential training to individuals, teams and organizations.

The Genesis Group has funded and formed a nonprofit research organization called the Sino-American Stress Management Center. The HeartMath Research Center in Boulder Creek, California has agreed to a long-term collaborative relationship with the new center to facilitate data analysis and research relating to different aspects of stress, as well as to assist in the validation of tools and methods that will be implemented to improve health and work performance in China. Target populations include sportsmen middle school students, pregnant women, civil aviation pilots, public security personnel, including police officers, etc.

Arizona State University

Arizona State University’s office of Clinical Partnerships and the HeartMath Research Center have formed a collaborative relationship that combines the resources of HeartMath’s psychophysiology and stress-management laboratory with an innovative laboratory at ASU that studies hormones and neurotransmitters in relation to stress and resiliency in athletes, soldiers, students and adult populations. A number of studies are planned that will combine neuroendocrine and HRV measures in various populations utilizing HeartMath’s stress-management programs.

Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship

Murray Gillin, professor of entrepreneurship at the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, has formed a collaborative partnership with the HeartMath Research Center.

In previous research, Dr. Gillin has studied successful repeat entrepreneurs and found that two characteristics appear to be common among these individuals. They report relying on their intuition in the decision-making process, and they have a sense of care and wanting to give back to the larger community. In other words, they tend to want to make the world a better place.

After learning of the HeartMath Research Center’s work on the electrophysiology of intuition, Dr. Gillin formed a collaborative relationship with IHM and they now are using the new experimental protocols developed at IHM to measure the psychophysiological basis of entrepreneurial intuition. So far, results of a study of repeat entrepreneurs from the Cambridge Technopole have been promising and confirm the findings of IHM’s earlier studies.

Gillin and HeartMath researchers are currently developing a new psychometric instrument for assessing intuition. A number of collaborative studies are planned.

Technology Licensing

Quantum Intech, Boulder Creek, Calif.

Quantum Intech (QI) researches, develops and licenses interactive technology to reduce stress, improve health and increase performance.
